November 11, 2010 - USTA National Championships
Apr 21, 2010 - UIL Regional Tournament
On the opening day Nicole and Maury defeated the Kingwood team 6-1, 6-1 and the Memorial Team 6-3,6-3.
On the final day Nicole and Maury lost a tough match to Marium Zein and Joe Hill. Their playoff hopes were not dead. Should Zein and Hill win the tournament and Nicole and Maury win their match to secure third place there would still be a playback to determine 2nd place.
Nicole and Maury defeated the Clear Lake team of Ocon and Taylor to secure 3rd place. Zein and Hill split sets, but eventually lost to the Taylor team of Crystal Leung and Tim Kuo.
Nicole and Maury finish 3rd.
Apr 7, 2010 - Nicole and Maury Advance to Regionals
Junior Maury Smalls and Sophomore Nicole Breaux finished as the District Runner-Up to Tim Kuo and Crystal Leung from Taylor. They lost a very competitve final 7-5,6-3.
Maury and Nicole are each making their 2nd appearance in the Regional Tournament. Maury was the District Singles Champion 2 years ago, and Nicole advanced to the State Tournament last year as a Freshman in Mixed Doubles. Maury and Nicole will be the likely #3 seed in the Regional Tournament on April 20 and 21.
Feb 13, 2010 - Fort Bend Tournament
Nicole and Maury Smalls upset Kourtney Howell and Gus Underwood to win the mixed doubles A draw of the Fort Bend Tournament.
Nicole's usual partner, Ryan Spencer, was attending a nationals tournament and Maury Smalls filled his shoes. This is a big win for Nicole and Maury. Kourtney and Gus were state qualifiers in mixed doubles in 2009. Kourtney's web site shows her achieving the #1 Texas ranking and the #5 Nationals ranking in Girls 16 doubles. Kourtney is a senior and will be attending Navy on scholarship.
Congratulations to Maury and Nicole! A great way to kick off the 2010 Spring season!
May 21, 2009 - SLHS Tennis Banquet and Academic Awards
Busy night! The tennis banquet started at 5:30 and ended at 7:05, the Academic Awards started at 7:00. The tennis banquet was great. The meal was exceptional, catered by La Finca Mexican Resturant. They served beef and chicken fajitas with all the sides. La Finca's serves a exceptional egg plant dish that is fried and filled with seafood. Try that next time you go! I guess that is another story.
Thank you Bernie for everything you did during the season and for the banquett! Coach Kevin and Coach Martinez. Great season! Thank you! Looking forward to 3 more!
Ryan Spencer and Nicole received the MVP award. Pretty cool!
We arrived at the Academic Awards just after 7 and by that time it was standing room only. Nicole, along with 600 other students, was recognized for maintaining > 4.0 gpa.
May 11, 2009 - UIL State Championships
The state tournament was held in Austin at the University of Texas Tennis stadium. Katy ISD chartered a bus to take the Katy players and Coaches to Austin. It was great having all the Katy players together. They left on Sunday and returned Wednesday afternoon.
Every player in the tournament has already succeeded in competition at the district and regional level. You would expect a very high level of competition, and it was. The tournament starts out in the Quarter Final round since there are 4 regions in Texas. In the Quarter final round a district champion will play a district runner up.
Ryan and Nicole was the runner up in Region III 5A Mixed Doubles event and played regional champions Stewart Pittman and Taylor Jurica of Southlake Carroll High School. Pittman and Jurica won the first set by a break, 6-3. The second set was a nail-biter. Ryan and Nicole had one set point in the tie-breaker that looked like a set win until Pittman's floating volley caught both lines. Pittman and Jurica scored the next 2 points to win the second set 7-6(8-6).
In the semi-finals Pittman and Jurica played the New Braunfels team of Scott Keeton and Hidako Techibanc. Keeton and Techiblan won that match 6-3, 7-6(3).
In the finals the New Braunfels team of Keeton and Techiblan defeated the Clear Lake team of Amanda DiCarlo and Brandon Farine 7-5, 6-3.
April 22, 2009 - Ryan and Nicole advance to State!
The mixed doubles team of Ryan Spencer and Nicole Breaux are finalist in the Region III-5A tournament. Their second match was against Memorial, this was a close match against a determined opponent, Ryan and Nicole took control in the third set winning 7-6(5), 6-7(5), 6-2. Tomorrow they will face Clear Lake #1.
April 9, 2009- District 17-5A tournament was held on April 8th and 9th. During the final rounds on Thursday, Katy Taylor, Cinco Ranch, and Seven Lakes had players competing for a opportunity to compete in regionals in most events. At the conclusion of the tournament Seven Lakes had 3 players advancing to regionals.
In mixed doubles Ryan Spencer and Nicole Breaux took the gold medal defeating Dwani Shaw and Alex Lee of Cinco Ranch.
In girls singles Rachael Green took 2nd place and will advance to regionals.
The Seven Lakes team held their own at district. This is their first year to compete in 5-A. Katy Taylor is well respected in Texas for many years. This year Cinco Ranch edged out Katy Taylor during the team tennis competition. Seven Lakes is not very far behind and is positioned to be the team to bean next school year.
Their is a write up on the tournament on the SevenLakesTennis.com and in the Katy Times. The Seven Lakes article has complete results for our players who placed but did not advance to regionals. The Katy Times has district wide results. Photos here:
Regionals will be played in Deer Park on April 21st and 22nd.
Pictures of the event can be found on here!

Lake Travis High School has an excellent tennis program and won their district in the fall. Our Spartans are in good company! Lake Travis is coached by Carol Creel who was hosting the event. Coach Creel and her staff get an A+ on this one!
Nicole played mixed doubles with Ryan Spencer. Nicole and Ryan won the Mixed Doubles, Division A. Congratulations to Nicole and Ryan. Ryan is the tall guy in the middle being supported by two of his buddies! The tournament was held at 3 locations. I got a few pictures of our players who were playing at Lakeway World of Tennis.

Saturday morning our Spartans played against Cy-Creek for their second clash this season. Last Tuesday Seven Lakes beat Cy-Creek by a margin of 6 points. In this game Cy-Creek remained close until half time. The 2nd half was a different story. Our Spartans increased their lead through out the half. Oct 25, 2008 - On Oct 7th our Spartans were defeated by Taylor High School. Then on Oct 14th district playoffs began with Cinco Ranch defeating Seven Lakes ending post season play. It was a good season, just a few close losses could have made the difference. In the final match against Cinco Ranch it looked like Seven Lakes was going to pull it off, but in the end Cinco Ranch came from behind on several courts to pull out an impressive victory. Cinco Ranch went on to beat Taylor to win District. Congratulations to Cinco Ranch. Read about that here!
Basketball officially started last Wednesday, Oct. 22nd with a 5:45 AM practice. Basketball practice is scheduled for every Saturday morning and are considered mandatory. Unless Nicole can work something out with the coach this will make it impossible to participate in Tennis Tournaments until Febuary.

Nicole and Shane easily won both of the mixed doubles matches. Nicole lost both her singles matches today. In the morning she played a very nice player currently ranked 49 in 18 supers. Nicole played great, loosing in the 3rd set tie breaker. Nicole's match in the afternoon was against another fine player ranked 26 in 16 supers.
Sept 5, 2008 - Seven Lakes High School in their 2nd tournament took on Kingwood High School in the morning and Memorial High School in the afternoon. The Kingwood match ended early with Seven Lakes taking the match 10-1. Memorial has a very strong team. Seven Lakes lost 10-4. When the match was called the remaining matches all looked good for Seven Lakes. It looks like we might have been one match away from pulling it off.
Since the last tournament Nicole was played a few more challenge matches. Having won 3 of 5 matches it appears that at least for now she is the Line 1 player.
Today Nicole played the Mixed Doubles Line with Shane Trebisky and Singles Line 1 against both schools. She and Shane won both matches and Nicole won her singles. (Results Here)

Aug 11, 2008 - Its almost time for school to start! Before that I thought I would post an update on Nicole's tennis. Last week Seven Lakes High School held their tennis try-outs. Nicole will be a member of the varsity tennis team. It looks like she will be competing at lines #1 or #2.

February 14, 2008 - Congratulations to the McMeans 8A team for their upset over our Bears. Our problems started with the jump. Microseconds after the clock first ticked our starting center went down with a ankle injury. From there the game was contested with every trip down the court. It was a low scoring game that ended with McMeans up by a single point. It just wasn't going to happen, you just felt it.
Our Bears had an outstanding season. Their tournament win just weeks earlier was very significant, beating several teams from other school districts, who either won their divisions or their district in the previous season. Their combined record for the season was 34 wins and 2 losses. Of note; Beckendorff defeated McMeans to win the division in the previous week.
Congratulations to all our the coaches. Our girls had a great season. Thank You for your time and commitment.
February 13, 2008 - The Bears 8B team loss.
February 10, 2008 - The Bears 8C Team beat the McMeans 8C Team for the Title of District Champions. Congratulations to the 8C team for an undefeated season and becoming the 8C District Champions. Go Bears!
February 7, 2008 - All 3 teams win again last night to finish their regular season undefeated. The 8C game... WOW! With 7 seconds remaining in the game McMeans is up by 1 point. After a foul they have possession from under the goal. They throw the ball in and the clock is ticking down. The crowd is yelling "foul her". At about 2 seconds the whistle blows, the clock continues to winds down to 0.9 seconds. McMeans makes their first shot of the 1 & 1 to go ahead by 2 points. The second shot misses the rim and our bears will inbound from under McMeans goal with 0.9 seconds on the clock. Our bears receive the inbound pass near mid court where Brook makes a softball like shot form half court. Everyone in building went wild. Unbelievable! Emotional! Its was really beyond words. Go Bears!
February 7, 2008 - Nicole qualified for Super Champs (Tennis) on February 3rd 2008. Today the Texas ranking list was published. Nicole's Texas ranking is 118. Nicole entered her first tournament on June 26, 2006, 19 months ago. Since then she has played in 24 tournaments and has a life time tournament record of 52 wins and 22 losses. Qualifying for Super Champs is a mile stone. Success at the Super champ level will be challenging as many of the top players are home schooled and train for tennis full time.
January 31, 2008 - All 3 teams, 8A, 8B, and 8C win their games against their capable rival, Beck Junior High. This win secures the Division title for all 3 teams. All 3 teams remain undefeated with 1 game remaining in regular season. Their combined record is now 22-0. Congratulations! Go Bears!
January 26, 2008 - The KISD JR. High School Girls 8A Basketball Tournament finished up with BDJH finishing 1st place. Go Bears!
The 3rd round game was against Sartartia. Sartartia is very good team. They finished off their 2007 season as Fort Bend Independent School District Champions. The game was contested from start to finish with BDJH ahead most of time by just a few points. This was an intense game. Final score 29-26.
The final would be against Morton Ranch. Katy Independent School District (KISD) has 2 divisions. Last year we won our division and Morton Ranch won theirs, both teams undefeated. We were scheduled to play Morton Ranch for the KISD championship. That game was canceled due to a freeze day. No doubt Morton Ranch is a good team. Much like the preceding 3 games this one had everything. But this game was different, we played better for 4 solid quarters. We took the lead and kept it for almost all of the game. Even though we were ahead most of the 1st quarter it ended with the score tied at 8-8. At half time the score was 15-13 going up by 2 at the buzzer. The 3rd quarter ended at 22-18. With 1 minute remaining the score was 29-21 with the final score being 30-23.
All 4 games this weekend was against either District Champions or Divisional Champions. It could have been called the Tournament Of Champions!
Congratulations Bears! This is truly an accomplishment.
January 24, 2008 - The KISD JR. High School Girls 8A Basketball Tournament started today and will continue on Saturday. Our 8A Bears beat an outstanding Memorial team in a highly contested match to kick off the tournament. Their second match was against Dulles. Dulles came to play but in the end our Bears were victorious! Both of these matches were within 2 points at the final buzzer. Our Bears are to be commended for their heart and never ever give up play. Both Memorial and Dulles would have one, but our bears never let up, not one play. It was amazing. Go Bears!
Tournament play will resume on Saturday. Our bears are scheduled to play at 10:15 AM on Saturday.

Nicole was one of many students that received multiple awards. The presentation started out with the Straight A Honor Roll for the entire year. Nicole was among the 50 or so recipients. It was no surprise that we saw these same students receive awards through out the presentation.
The final award given that day was the Kodiak Award. The Kodiak Award is presented to the student who best demonstrates model Bear traits. The award was presented by Ted Vierling, Beckendorff principal. The award is usually given to one boy and one girl. This year the award for 7th grade girl was tied. Nicole was one of the recipients.

January 25, 2007 - Congratulations to 7A, 7B, and 7C for their win against our rival Beck!
7A Recap: Beck's A team guard was much talked about pre-game, certainly a gifted and talented player. Beck appeared to be a solid team lead by an experienced guard. The Bears played solid defense for 4 quarters. Offensively the Bears maintained a double digit lead for most of the game. In the end the well balanced talent and depth of the Bears were just to much for Beck. Pictures can be found on the basketball page. Go Bears!
January 20, 2007 - Congratulations to the Bears! After the disappointing overtime loss in the first round the bears dominate their next 3 games to win the consolation tournament. Pictures can be found on the basketball page. Go Bears!
January 18, 2007 - Bears loose 1st round match 17-18 in overtime. It was a different kind of basketball. One player on their team had 7 tackles and 3 sacks... HA! The Bears and their coach did great under marginal circumstances. In the second game the Bears easily win. Play resumes Saturday morning. Go Bears!
Editors Note: I made a comment late in game No. 1 that our defense was able to contain their offence without tackling them and throwing them into the cinder block wall. I also noticed that there was no real penalty for such actions. Perhaps this type of play is the norm for them and their officials.
I was somewhat perplexed at first when the security guard told me I could not take pictures from behind the baseline. Having been in their gym for 2 games I now understand his restriction. It is really rough behind the baseline! - b

Our very good friend, Dr. Richard Deichmann, wrote a book. Dr. Deichmann was the hospital's chief of medicine at Memorial Baptist Hospital during Katrina. September 16, 2006 - 7th Grade Volleyball A finishes 3rd in tournament. The Bears were in a good position to win the tournament, in their final game, serving at 14 -13... but in the final 3 points it was more a matter of being unlucky. The tie breaker for 2nd place came down to total games. The Bears ultimately took 3rd place by a 1 point margin, 113-112. The Bears record for the tournament was 1win and 3 ties.

Tennis: This weekend Nicole played in the HTA ZAT. She played in the 14GS. This was her first ZAT in the 14GS Division. There were 67 girls in this division. They created 3 brackets. Nicole WON hers. So now she is a CHAMP, first try!
Nicole played 5 matches, 3 on Saturday and 2 on Sunday.
- Chelsea Hylton 6-1, 6-0
- Reilli Russell 6-0, 6-1
- Jessie Hampton (1) 6-3, 6-0
- Kayla Panazzo (3) 6-1, 0-6, 10-8
- Natalia Lara (2) 5-7, 6-0, 6-4
On Saturday Nicole played 6 sets of aggressive tennis with a very low error count. In the last 4 games of her second match she was on fire. She hit a few aces. She was winning point after point without any errors. Balls were landing within a foot of the line. It was beautiful. After this match when asked about the last set - "I don't know. It was weird. I was in a peaceful place".
Sunday's matches started the same way with Nicole winning the first set against Kayla Panazzo 6-1. It looked like she was going to cruse into Finals. Kayla was a very good player who came into the tournament seeded #3. Kayla played very well in both sets. Nicole seemed to get down on herself after fighting hard and loosing the first 2 games of the second set. I also think she got a little tight when she realized how close she was to reaching the finals, and having a chance to Champ-Up on her first try. After loosing the second set she won the Super Tie-Break 10-8.
Natalia Lara; Nicole had played Natalia a few weeks ago in the Semi-Final round of the Copperfield tournament. Due to rain they were required to start each set at 2-2. Natalia won the first 4 games, Nicole won the next 4. Then Nicole lost the Super Tie-Break. The whole affair took 30 minutes. This day would be different - Its the finals and in the finals they play out the 3rd set.
The first set was a battle from the first point. Nicole, on serve at 5-6, was broken, loosing 5-7 in the first set. Nicole wins the second set 6-0. In the 3rd set Nicole looses game 1 and game 2 then wins game 3 and game 4 to square it up at 2-2. The match is now over 2 hours. With Nicole serving at 4-4 Natalia has 3 match points. Nicole survives and goes up 5-4. Nicole breaks Natalia with aggressive play and wins the final.
